Katonah Native and Artist John Donohue and “All the Restaurants in New York”

John Donohue will present slides from All the Restaurants in New York and talk about his work with Julia Sexton, the editor-in-chief of Edible Westchester. The evening is cosponsored by the Katonah Village Improvement Society and the Katonah Village Library. Refreshments will be provided. For more information visit www.katonahVIS.org.
Since 2017, Donohue, a former editor at The New Yorker turned self-taught artist, has been drawing all the restaurants in Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, Queens, and Brooklyn. He posts his drawings to his website All the Restaurants (www.alltherestaurants.com), which has been covered by The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Food Network Magazine, and other publications.
“All the Restaurants in New York,” published in May by Abrams, features 101 of the city’s most iconic eateries, from romantic spots like Le Bernardin to holes-in-the-wall like Corner Bistro. From high-end places like Per Se to low-priced delights like Shake Shack, Donohue renders beloved restaurants in a manner that captures their emotional pull. Characterized by appealingly loose and gently distorted lines, his drawings are intentionally spare, leaving room for the viewer to layer on meaning and recall connections to memories of a meal, of a moment, of an atmosphere. Donohue, who has drawn close to 400 New York establishments, works in ink, from life, with no corrections. Each one takes him almost exactly twenty minutes, and he adds one color later, on a computer.
Donohue offers signed, limited-edition prints on his website, and they make great gifts. All his work is limited to lots of 365, making each one a beautiful reminder of how our days are numbered. People from all over the country and the world buy his prints online. They get them to remember first dates, engagements, business deals, graduations, and other big events. He has patrons as far away as South Africa, Europe, and New Zealand.
