Great Decisions- Topic: The US and China: Rivals or Adversaries

April 9 @ 10:30 am

Is China a U.S. national security threat? TikTok legislation came up four years ago and didn’t pass. Now it has overwhelming support. Our perception of the China threat has clearly changed.

Chinese leader Xi JinPing has instructed the Peoples’ Liberation Army to be prepared by 2027 to take over Taiwan, home of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Meanwhile, US authorities have placed restrictions on shipments of AI chips to China out of concern that the Chinese military could use them to make advanced weapons and conduct cyberwarfare.

The US is 6+ years into a trade war with China, which seems more emboldened than ever to pursue its nationalist trade agenda. Since President Nixon opened the door to trade with China, manufacturing jobs have disappeared en masse, as factories closed, causing whole regions of this country to suffer “Deaths of Despair.”

How can we, how should we, respond to the challenge that is China?

Join us for a lively, informative, intelligent and impartial discussion.
