New York’s Suffrage Centennial – Photo Exhibit

The Katonah Village Library is the first library in Westchester to host a comprehensive photo exhibit from the New York State Museum, Albany, entitled Votes for Women: Celebrating New York’s Suffrage Centennial during the month of March. The exhibit is brought to the Katonah Village Library through the generous support of the League of Women Voters of North East Westchester (LWVNEW) serving Bedford, Lewisboro, Mt. Kisco , North Salem, and Pound Ridge. The opening reception is on Friday, March 3 at 6:30 pm, followed by a screening of Iron Jawed Angels, a historical drama (2004) starring Hilary Swank, Margo Martindale, and Anjelica Huston. On Friday March 24 the library will host the film Suffragette, the 2015 drama starring Casey Mulligan at 7pm. The opening reception and the movies are free of charge and all are welcome.

Votes for Women celebrates the centennial of women’s suffrage in New York State. The Empire State was three years ahead of federal suffrage for women in 1920. The exhibit spans from the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention through 1917, when New York State granted women the right to vote. The exhibition also highlights the role of New York State leaders in women’s rights and the feminist movement through the twenty-first century. The LWVNYS was born out of the suffrage movement in New York in November 1919 and the National LWVUS in 1920. The large exhibit at the State Museum opens in November 2017 and features suffrage material never displayed before.

The exhibit will go to the John Jay High School Library in Cross River for the first two weeks in April and travel to other area schools. The exhibit will be on view in the Garden Room, located on the accessible lower level through the entire month of March, which is Women’s History Month.

KVL Presents 3rd Annual GospelFest

gospelfest_3For the past two years on a Saturday afternoon in February, the doors have been blown off of the library by the joyous voices of area gospel choirs. The tradition continues this year with three choir groups performing. This will be the third visit of the Antioch Baptist Church Choir. They have been singing hymns, anthems, and spirituals for the Antioch Baptist Church in Bedford Hills for over one hundred years, St.John’s Wilmot Choir of New Rochelle is also returning for the third year. With a more experimental repertoire, they have performed at the Palace Theater and for the NY Diocese Convention. This year they will combine forces with the library’s own choir, harmonize this. Newcomers to the GospelFest are the choir of Nyack College NYC called Purpose.

The festival was started by Stephanie Hartwell-Mandella, the Youth Services Librarian, who just can’t stop singing. She saw GospelFest as the way to bring gospel to a wider audience. Hartwell-Mandella has also built a choir right at the library’s Steinway Grand Piano with Frank L. Pisani (New York Blues Hall of Fame) with the idea that everyone can sing: “We are always looking for positive ways to connect. Everyone has so much fun. And it is true that we all sound better together!” There will be a chance for all to experience that harmony when the choirs and the audience join together in the final song. So come and expect to be lifted and inspired, roused, and filled with hand-clapping, foot-stomping rhythm.

Saturday, February 18 at 2pm

Tickets available at the door: $5.00 donation, children under the age of five are free.

The concert is on the lower level of the library, located at 26 Bedford Road in Katonah. 232-3508
